At Caffeinate Digital, we’ve challenged ourselves to go completely zero waste for 1 week.

Here are 6 tips that have helped us, and might help you, on our journey to becoming more sustainable in the office.

1. Get Paperless

Try to limit unnecessary printing. As a digital marketing agency, the amount we print is small, but we try to keep this in mind whenever possible.

You could reduce the amount of printing in the office by sending necessary paperwork before meetings, taking paperless notes, and when needing to print, having printer rules in place. Example – When printing more than one page, you must print using both sides of the paper.

2. Simple Swaps

Swap out your single-use plastic cups, water bottles or straws and instead bring in a reusable alternative.

A handy tip is to keep alternatives in your desk in case an emergency requires it.

Many of the Caffeinate team keep a reusable grocery bag, a reusable coffee cup (if we feel the urge to get a takeaway coffee), metal straws, and a fork in our drawers.

3. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

This tip may seem obvious, but if we can’t reduce the waste entirely, the next best thing is finding an alternative that is kinder to the environment.

Make sure your office has clearly labelled and easy-to-find recycling bins for staff and visitors. Encouraging people to recycle efficiently and reuse things like folders and notebooks, and taking notes on the back of old pages, will help the environment and save you money in the long run.

4. Keep the Snacks Eco-Friendly

Have things in the office to keep the temptation away from feeling the need to purchase outside of the office.

For example, at Caffeinate Digital, we have a coffee machine in the office, so we’re not continually purchasing takeaway coffee.

5. Un-Plug

Remembering to turn off all computers, printers/copiers, and other electronics that do not need to be left on at the end of the day can help reduce energy usage.

6. Nobody is Perfect

Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes! The road to being more sustainable can be a long (and bumpy) one. One person at a time, we can make a difference.

So there you have it, 6 tips to up your sustainability game in the office.
