How SEO can IMPROVE your Search Engine Rankings in Google
SEO is a wonderful thing. Digital marketers love SEO like chocoholics love chocolate, and for good reason.
Okay so it doesn’t taste good, but once you start, you can’t help but want more.
SEO is all about generating increased reach for your website through organic search engine results. Put simply, it could equal the difference between a good website, and a great website. One that performs, and one that doesn’t.
The former head of the Spamdexing team at Google Matt Cutts refers to SEO as if it were a resume.
“You polish it, so you can have your best foot forward.”
Let’s rewind a little.
If you’re sitting there wondering what on earth we’re talking about, don’t fret. We’ve scoured the net and identified some of the most asked questions to do with SEO, for all your reading (and brain absorbing) goods.
What does SEO actually stand for?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation.
What is SEO? What does SEO mean? Can you explain it in basic terms?
Let’s think of your website as the ‘ocean’ many digital rivers flow toward.
Ultimately, the biggest ‘river’ that flows towards it is this wild and wonderful thing called organic search.
We need to get as much of this as we can to lead to your website.
And even though a website might look spick, span, shiny and ultimately beautiful, it could be falling behind on the SEO side of things. WITHOUT implementing STRONG SEO, people might find your website DIFFICULT to find through Google, or mighn’t even find it at all.
Focusing on good SEO is all about keeping the ‘Google Gods’ happy, after all.
When should you implement SEO?
Think of it like a recipe.
It’s not like you can beat the eggs into a cake after you’ve put the mixture in the oven. It just won’t work.
Put simply, if SEO isn’t ‘cooked’ or ‘mixed in’ at the correct time in the website design process, then you’ll be putting your website out there for the first time without all the right ingredients.
That, or you could have no choice but to ‘go back to the drawing board’ – that’s more time, and more money.
Essentially, you should perform SEO research and implementation before your website goes live, and continue to maintain it for the lifetime of your website.
How long does it take for SEO to work?
We’re sorry to break it to you this way, but there’s no concrete answer to this question. Yes, we all want to be the number one ranked website on Google, but it won’t happen overnight.
There are a few things you need to consider.
How savvy are your competitors’ SEO strategies? The more businesses and companies offering same or similar goods or services, the longer list of those you’ll need to compete against for prime positioning in Google search.
The closer you get to the first page of Google, the trickier it’ll be to outrank them (given those on the first page typically have on-point SEO methods).
That’s why investing in SEO (and STRONG, well-implemented SEO) is worth every cent.
But how do you do SEO?
Content plays a key role.
Remember when you would ask your school teacher “How Long” the essay or story needed to be? And they’d tell you “Quality, not quantity.”
The same principle applies here. There’s no minimum or maximum word count. In fact, word counts don‘t mean a whole lot in this instance.
By implementing trending keywords, you can optimise your content. Maintaining a constant and consistent publishing schedule is also important – the more visits to your website, the more ‘positive user experiences’ your website will receive, which can speed up your SEO goals.
Some agencies will tell you it’ll take years to crawl to the top of search engines everywhere, but Google themselves dispelled that very theory.
“In most cases, SEOs need four months to a year to help your business first implement improvements and then see potential benefit,” Google’s Maile Ohye said.
